These two pairs of door handles, imaginative and useful in their own right, get a real workout at the entrance to the Seattle Justice Center.

Colorful door handles go way back. From ancient tombs to the first skyscrapers, attention to detail (notably coordinated door handles) play a part in architectural design.

These four handles are a sneak peek of the artwork about to come. As part of the "Points of View" experience (another piece in the lobby), they are the starting point for most people entering the building. I say "most," as the occasional individual will hold the door open for the person following. Ah, but what is that person missing when responding to the random act of kindness?

In short, a tactile experience. The ridges of the handle, the secure mooring to the door, the temperature of the metal.. all these things might be overlooked. But when the individual uses an ornate handle attached to a massive door, the feedback is instant. The large steel rectangle moves, and the person is granted access. In the realm of art, touching a piece is not only uncommon but to be enjoyed.

A question: did you touch a piece of art today?
