Common Ground (2002)
by Joanne Hammer
Some historians believe the mosaic form dates back to early Rome. Whatever its true origin, the style is particulary detailed, requiring the artist to select hundreds, if not thousands, of individual tiles for assembly into a larger work.
In this piece, Joanne Hammer depicts human forms in conjunction with other civilizations and origins. Faces, expressions, and body movements work together to create an essay on similarity. To at least one viewer, anyway. ;-) The work relies on color, surface movement, and a tile-by-tile relationship to make its statement. The work is particularly engaging when viewed close-up.
Common ground: it's something all individuals (and not just artists and audience) can share.
