General Charles Gordon served in the British army and participating in combat in the Crimea, China, Egypt and Sudan. It was in Khartoum, Sudan where the rebellious forces of the Mahdi broke through the defenses and beheaded Gordon in January of 1885.

In 1888, this statue of Gordon sculpted by Hamo Thornycroft was erected first in Trafalgar Square. It has been installed in this location along Victoria Embankment since 1953.
