Adams-Cotton Family Zinc Headstones - Attica, NY - Zinc Headstones on Waymarking.com

On the north side of Forest Hills Cemetery are several zinc headstones. This one in particular is for a large family and it surrounded by 12 small zinc markers. The oldest man on the large zinc marker is Parmenio Adams. According to the Biographical Directory of the United States Congress:

ADAMS, Parmenio, a Representative from New York; born in Hartford, Conn., September 9, 1776; attended the common schools; moved in 1806 to “Phelps Corners,” then in the township of Batavia, Genesee County (now Attica, Wyoming County), N.Y.; held commissions in the New York State Militia from 1806 to 1816 as lieutenant of light Infantry, captain of Grenadiers, second and first major, and division inspector of Infantry; served in the War of 1812 as major and commandant of New York Volunteers for some months on the Niagara frontier and was recommended for a majority in the United States Army by Gov. Daniel D. Tompkins, of New York; twice appointed sheriff of Genesee County, serving in 1815 and 1816, and again from 1818 to 1821; engaged in agricultural pursuits and also was a construction contractor on the Erie Canal; successfully contested the election of Isaac Wilson as an Adams-Clay Republican candidate to the Eighteenth Congress; reelected as an Adams to the Nineteenth Congress and served from January 7, 1824, to March 3, 1827; died in Alexander, Genesee County, N.Y., February 19, 1832.

Parmenio's wife was Eleanor, born January 15, 1778 and died September 21, 1836. It appears their daughter was Laura Adams, who was born November 30, 1807 in Attica, NY and died November 12, 1873. She married Owen Cotton, born in Hartland, VT on August 23, 1782. He died September 5, 1871.

Strangely, Owen Cotton's two previous wives are buried with the Adams family. Hannah Earll was Owen's first wife. She died March 31, 1823 at the age of 33. Together they had one daughter, Hannah L., who died September 20, 1823 at the age of 13 months. These two names are on the west side of the marker.

Experience Earll was presumably Owen's second wife. She died May 29, 1830 at the age of 33. Together they had two children, Edward G. who died Februrary 28, 1832 at the age of 6, and Adeline who died August 24, 1830 at the age of 3 months. These three names can be found on the north side of the headstone.

In addition to the names on the large zinc headstone, James Adams (1797-1863) and Mary Beman (1800-1854, wife of James Adams) appear on the small headstones. James Adams appears to be Eleanor Adams' brother.
