As the city of Hartford became populated with immigrants to work in the factories (ie. Colt Firearms), the affluent people of Hartford wanted more spacious living conditions. Asylum Hill was originally farmland. Mark Twain and Harriet Beecher Stowe lived on what was previously known as Nook Farm. As more people built homes in the area, Asylum hill, originally known as "Lords Hill," became a prominent community.
Asylum Hill Congregational Church was built in 1865/6 and is the only Gothic congregational church in the greater Hartford Area. When Mark Twain lived in Connecticut, this was his church.
Asylum Avenue District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.
