The downtown branch is one of 10 branches in the Hartford Public Library system.
From the Library web page:
The Library was founded in 1774 as The Librarian Company by a few subscribers to purchase a "collection of useful and religious books".
On my visit the library wasn't open yet. There was a man sitting outside the front door. He had his laptop plugged in to an outlet, on the front of the building, and was accessing the libraries free wifi.
The renovation of the building started 10 years ago and is continuing to this day.
