Louis Bromfield was born in nearby Mansfield, Ohio on December 27, 1896. He grew up there but moved around throughout his life before finally settling at Malabar Farm, outside of Lucas, Ohio.
Bromfield is best known to most as a author. He wrote over 30 works between 1924 and 1955. Many of these books focused on his first love, agriculture. While the works are mostly fictional he drew heavily from his life experiences.
In 1939 he moved back to north central Ohio after having spent a decade in France. At that time he began to build Malabar Farm. He used the farm to practice and teach new methods of sustainable farming. Bromfield would frequently invite farmers from all over the world to see his farm and to educate them on his methods. It has been said that every Sunday morning he would gather a group, and take them to the top of nearby Mt. Jeez. From here one can see the entire lay of Bromfield's farm. This made it easy for Bromfield to point out different areas where he was trying new techniques. He also held many social events here including the 1945 marriage of Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall
Bromfield is buried with other family members in Olivet Cemetery. The cemetery is on Malabar Farm grounds and is commonly known as Bromfield Cemetery, or Malabar Farm Cemetery. Bromfield died March 18, 1956.
