Long Description:
Abraham Hilton was a native of Barnard Castle and lived in this house until his death in 1902. I believe he was a Tea, Wine & Spirit Dealer with premises in Barnard Castle.
He is know for the charitable trusts he set up in the area to help the poor. His name survives in the Hilton trusts. I have found a few examples and these are shown below-:
The Cotherstone and Three Chimneys Charity.— This parish is entitled to benefit by pensions from this charity, founded by Abraham Hilton by deed poll dated 2 May 1898
Township of Boldron.—This township is entitled to participate in the Bowes Cross Charity, founded in 1878 by Abraham Hilton.
These townships are around Barnard Castle.
