200 Public Square was completed in 1985 for use by Standard Oil of Ohio (Sohio) as their corporate headquarters. When Sohio was acquired by British Petroleum, the building was renamed from the Sohio Building to BP Tower. It was originally intended to be taller than Terminal Tower, Cleveland's tallest building at the time, but the city council would not allow it stating that no building should be taller than the city's landmark building.
When BP purchased Amoco, the company moved their headquarters to Chicago and sold this building. It was at that time renamed as 200 Public Square. The building is one of three skyscrapers that currently anchor the square.
