Tree Trunk Gorge Track begins across the bridge over the upper Tongariro River at Trunk Gorge, reached from a side road off the Desert Road 23kms south of Turangi.
The track is shared with mountainbikers on a good path through mountain beech forest on leaf covered trails. Old lava crags and pristine native bush are the outstanding features on this walk. You will need to be aware that the track is also shared with bikers.
The first track bridge has washed out but the stream can be easily crossed on foot. Passing lava cliffs, the track climbs high above the Tongariro River and passes some beautiful old beech tree specimens, crossing several small streams to emerge at the Urchin Camping ground. You may spot deer in the forest if you are lucky. You can follow the track right through to the Pillars of Hercules where a new Swingbridge crosses the Tongariro River providing awesome views into the narrow gorge below.
It is best to arrange transport pickup at this end otherwise you will have to return along the track to your vehicle. The track takes about 3 hours easy walking, one way.
