When Albion was first settled in 1835 at this river site, it was known as the "Forks." Every year, the town of Albion has a festival called the Festival of the Forks. The Festival is named after the forks of the Kalamazoo River's north and south branches. Again, the confluence of these two branches, with reinforced banks for erosion prevention, are located in Rieger Park in Albion, Michigan.
