This is part of the Nez Perce Trail, (primary web link)which runs from Wallowa Lake, Oregon, to the Bear Paw Battlefield near Chinook, Montana. A road side marker here tells of Lewis and Clark (detailed in secondary web link) being directed along this trail by the Nez Perce People. They had used this section for centuries as a pack route over Alpowa pass to the Snake River, where they wintered over and fished.
