In 1688 John Ladd, a surveyor of Philadelphia for William Penn came in to possession of 7,000 acres of timbered land along the Delaware River. Shortly after obtaining this land, Ladd built the manor house, "Candor Hall" now known as "Ladd's Castle". The main portion of the house was constructed of brick which were made on the grounds and had two wings constructed of hewn logs. The house was was added to and altered at various times over the years. The house is reputed to be the oldest brick house in Gloucester County.
