The building of this dam began in 1935 and was finished in 1939.
At 2,640 feet it is one of the longest dams in the eastern U.S.
Its height above the river is 170 feet and its width at the top is 35 feet. The maximum width at the bottom is 1,100 feet and its construction required 4 million cubic yards of fill.
Along with the Goodenough Dike it holds back 412 billion gallons of water.
