An andetoctal story about the building: "When architect Birge Clark met with federal officials in Washington, D.C. in the late 1920s, the bureaucrats objected to two things in his plans for Palo Alto's first post office.
First, they did not like that he called it the "Palo Alto Post Office" rather than the "United States Post Office in Palo Alto." And second, the building's style was "not appropriate for a federal building," said Steve Staiger, historian of the Palo Alto Historical Association.
So Clark called a lunch break to dine with old family friends - President Hoover and his wife - at the White House. Apparently his connections impressed the bureaucrats.
"When he came back from lunch, his drawings were approved," Staiger said." (
