December 29, 1862-Brig. Gen. Joseph Wheeler's Cavalry Brigade bivouacked hereabouts in the evening. At midnight, it moved north on Walterhill, then west on Jefferson, on a raid around Rosecrans' advancing army. The brigade consisted of the 1st. 3rd and 51st Alabama, the 8th Confederate Cavalry. Douglass' and Holman's Cavalry Battalions and Wiggins' Arkansas Battery. The 1st Tennessee Cavalry was attached from Pegram's Brigade.
