Long Description:These five archangels stand at the base of the tower of the National Shrine of the Little Flower. There are many traditions about archangels. This being a Catholic church, this description will concentrate on those traditions.
St Thomas divided angels into an heirarchy of three levels. The archangels are the closest to God.
The angels here are:
- Michael - one of the principal angels, mentioned in the books of Daniel, St Jude, and Revelation. He has four offices: to fight Satan, to rescue souls of the faithful, to champion God's people, and to call souls to judgement.
- Gabriel - the angel of mercy, compared to Michael, the angel of judgment. He is also mentioned in Daniel and is the Angel who foretells of the births of John the Baptist and Jesus.
- Raphael - only named in the Book of Tobit, and often identified with the "angel of the Lord" in John 5. He is associated with healing.
- Uriel - this angel is only mentioned in apocryphal Jewish books such as Enoch. His name means "The Fire of God" or "The Light of God".
- Jophiel - like Uriel, he is found in apocryphal texts. His name means "The Beauty of God". Some consider him to be the angel that led Adam and Eve out of Eden.
