Bear Meadows Natural Area was designated as a National Natural Landmark in October of 1965, and is important for understanding the climatic history of the area.

The focal point of the Bear Meadows Natural area is the boreal bog, which was has been forming since the end of the last ice age when it began its life as a pond. Natural damning has since caused an accumulation of dirt, silt and vegetation, which has resulted in the peat bog that exists today.
The bog is also surrounded by old growth timber which is unique to the small expanse of the natural area, as it is comprised of balsam fir and black spruce trees (which are typically found much farther north). The area is also home to towering rhododendrons, many of which 20 ft tall, as well as the rare, carnivorous sundew plant.
There is one main access point to the natural area, although other trail access does exist. From this access point, a loop trail of approximately 3.5 miles encircles the natural area.
