At the time of its construction in 1993, the Emeryville train station was the first station to have been constructed in California in 50 years. The station, designed by architects Heller and Leake, became a clean and modern replacement for the seismically unfit West Oakland station to the south. The Amtrak Capitol Corridor route to Sacramento, the California Zephyr to Chicago, the Coast Starlight which runs from Seattle to Los Angeles, and the San Joaquin to Bakersfield all run through Emeryville. It is also the closest Amtrak station to San Francisco and buses run from here to the city.
