During the early morning hours of June 17, an even more sinister if less noticeable operation took place at Ponte Vedra Beach. The German submarine U-584 landed four German agents on the beach. They were part of the eight-man Operation Pastorius (the other four agents had landed on Long Island, N.Y.).
Their plan was to commit various acts of sabotage across the United States. But one of the German agents immediately surrendered to the FBI and, by June 27, they all had been arrested. Two were imprisoned and, after the war, sent back to Germany. The other six died in the electric chair.
