The fountain was created for the 1962 World's Fair by artist Everett DuPen and architect Paul Thiry. In addition to the fountain and the large pool, one will find three bronze sculptures, Tree of Life, Flight of Gulls, and Seaweed. On a hot summer day, one will likely also find some children cooling off!
The work was remodeled in 1992. This included the beginning of the water being chemically treated. In 2006, a swimming pool filter was added to further improve the water quality.
A plaque for the fountain can be found up the nearby stairs overlooking the pool at N47 37.377 W122 21.234. It reads:
"FOUNTAIN OF CREATION
Everett DuPen, Sculptor
COMMISSIONED
for
CENTURY 21 WORLD'S FAIR 1962
FOUNTAIN RECONSTRUCTED 1992"
Everett DuPen's online resume (at http://www.everettdupen.com) names the work as both the Fountain of Creation and the DuPen Fountain.
When we visited, it appeared this was also the location of a beer garden for the Bite of Seattle!
