Charles Mound is the highest point in Illinois. It is located on private property. It is a 1.2-mile walk from the designated parking spot at N42 29.353 W090 14.280. The walk is on a nice grassy lane that then turns into a graveled lane, which takes you all the way to the top. A nicely mowed area greets you there, along with two chairs and a large box that contains the Summit Register. Feel free to move the chairs into the shade if you wish. Cool off while signing the log and enjoying the view. Then move the chair back when you put the register back in the box.
WARNING!!
This Summit is located on private property. The following note from the owner is located within the Register and should be heeded:
"Charles Mound is part of a privately owned farm. We allow people seriously interested in visiting the state “Hi-Points”, as well as those interested in Illinois history, access to our property on the first full weekends of June, July, August, and September to visit. If you are here at a time other than this, you are trespassing. We hope you have enjoyed our peaceful sight and beautiful view. Signed, Wayne & Jean Wuebbles, PO Box 186, Scales Mound, IL 61075”
Remember that it must be the first FULL weekend of the month. This year, June 1, was on Sunday. They were closed on that day. June 8 & 9 were the days to visit in June,2008.
