George Schmal, also spelled Schmahl, was a blacksmith during the U.S. Civil War. He served in the Union Army in Company M, 24th New York Cavalry. Schmal was one of ten cavalrymen awarded the Medal of Honor at Paines Crossroads, Virginia during action on April 5, 1865. All ten men were awarded the Medal of Honor for the capture of one of the battle flags of the Confederate units at Paines Crossroads.
He was born in Germany in 1849 and died August 4, 1923. Mr. Schmal is buried in the GAR section of Forest Lawn Cemetery in Buffalo.
*****UPDATE 5/5/2019***** A question whether this George Schmal is the actual MOH recipient, or a different veteran who served with the 8th Cavalry and was born in New York. Further research is needed. TLO
