"EL CAMINO REAL MARKER, NE. corner Du Bourg Place, approximately 75 feet south of Merchant St., is a red-granite shaft on the route of the King s Highway of the Spanish era. The road, laid out in 1789, extended from New Madrid, through Ste. Genevieve, to St. Louis. It followed an ancient Indian path, and was probably but little better than a trail"    - Missouri: A Guide to the "Show Me" State, Ste. Genevieve section, pg. 274.
