This piece was designed by Rebecca Cummins, associate professor at University of Washington School of Art. The piece was installed before the library opened on August 12, 2006. This is Cummins's first public art project. Light flows through the five different colored circles, but the orange circle has special significance.
The orange circle indicates both solar and clock noon between the spring and autumn equinox. This is accomplished with screws and markings on the floor. In the winter, the ceiling beams block the light projections.
The colors move and project onto different objects throughout the day. There is information available at the front desk of the library on the project and how the sundial works.
There are a small number of parking spaces available under the library (off of 24th Ave E). There is one handicapped spot and a 10 minute or less spot available off of E McGraw Street. Two hour free street parking is plentiful on the side streets as well.
