The Associated Students of the University of California, a non- profit organization, is responsible for extracurricular activities on the campus. It operates a store and restaurant in Stephens Union, the students' building. It arranges intercollegiate athletic contests, using the funds to support debating, dramatics, sport, student publications, and many other activities. The A.S.U.C. building contains offices for the athletic coaches and student executives and clubrooms for the students.

18. STEPHENS UNION is of Tudor Gothic design with turrets, buttresses, leaded casements and oriel bays. Dedicated in 1923 to the late Henry Morse Stephens, professor of history at the university, it is the center of student social life and extra-curricular activities.

Stephens Hall now houses the International and Area Studies College and the Townsend Center for the Humanities. The student population has grown from approximately 14,000 in 1938 to nearly 35,000 in 2008 and the student extracurricular needs require a much larger building. The ASUC Student Union comprised of the Cesar Chavez and Martin Luther King Jr. buildings was constructed south of Sather Gate in 1961 to house some of these activities. There is still, however, a graduate student lounge in a cathedral-like room on third floor of Stephens where grad students are allowed to eat and quietly study on comfy overstuffed furniture.
