John Capen "Grizzly" Adams was the subject of the 1970's Television Series "The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams". Headstone is rumored to have been commissioned by P.T. Barnum.
Description: In his time, Grizzly Adams was a famous bear hunter and trainer, associated with PT Barnum. 150 years later, a television series "The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams", was produced. This series was very loosely based on his life.
According to local legend:
Adams left his wife and children in Charlton MA and went west, where he was a trapper and animal trainer. He trained a grizzly bear to hunt other bears, and is blamed for the population decline of grizzly bears in California. He was befriended by and worked with P.T. Barum. Adams was injured by a trained bear, returned to his wife in Charlton and eventually died from his head injury. His headstone was commissioned by PT Barnum.
