Peoples Fair is an annual festival that has been in existence since
1969. The Peoples Fair was first held on the 17th Street Esplanade
of East High School. My mother participated for many years selling
her handmade toys, puppets and cloth bags. The fair outgrew the
venue and was moved to Civic Center Park in 1987, where it
continues to this day. The fair was traditionally held on Memorial
Day weekend (with a rain date of the first weekend in June).
Colorado is notorious for having bad weather on Memorial Day
weekend, and the fair often had to be moved to the first weekend in
June. After several years, the Peoples Fair officially became the
first weekend in June as its yearly date.
The Peoples Fair is a fundraiser for the group Capitol Hill
United Neighborhoods (CHUN), but retains its 70s roots as a place
to gather information about different community groups and
organizations. While there are many excellent craft and art booths,
there are community booths for pet adoption, religious tolerance,
recycling and environmental issues, vegetarianism, LGBT and
political parties. The fair is free of charge and features free
concerts throughout the day on several stages, free arts activities
for kids, educational booths from the Federal and State governance
agencies (I like to search for the fossils) as well as a great
'people watching' day.
Disclosure: I do have a chair massage booth at the fair (9
consecutive years now!), so many of the pictures are quick shots I
took while on a bathroom break. I only make money when I am
massaging, so I didn't really have time to get booth, people and
band shots of the festival. The Peoples Fair usually draws between
150,00 to 175,000 attendees over the weekend (if the weather is
good).
