This depot opened Ashed County to the rest of the world when it arrived in 1915. The railroad using this depot was soon given the name "Virginia Creeper" due to it's often slow service.
The railroad carried mostly freight, which brought West Jefferson's initial commercial growth.
Before the railroad and the resulting town, a few families lived in the valley known for its cherry tree orchards. The valley is located between Mount Jefferson to the east and Paddy Mountain to the west.
On the Virginia Creeper trail, this is one of the four original buildings still standing that was part of the depot in West Jefferson.
The final picture with the mural was where the original depot stood.
