It was built between 1069 and 1100 on the foundations of the Roman Temple of Claudius, which can still be seen, beneath the keep, on castle tours. The castle has seen battle, with it being besieged by King John in 1215 and the Royalist leaders, Sir Charles Lucas and Sir George Lisle, being executed during the English Civil War. It has also been a prison and is famous for being the place where Matthew Hopkins imprisioned suspected witches during the 17th century.
Today, the castle houses an excellent museum (you have to pay an entrance fee), which is well worth a visit.
