In November 1776, a group of American rebels attempted to take Fort Beausejour with the idea of encouraging Nova Scotia to join the rebelling colonies. Captain Thomas Dixson and 3 volunteers sailed across Minas Basin and then got to Halifax to warn of the invasion. A force was sent that routed the Americans. Without Dixson's actions it is possible that Nova Scotia and New Brunswick may have become part of the United States.
He went on to represent Cumberland Town in the Nova Scotia Assembly and later Westmoreland in the New Brunswick Assembly. Dixson's grave stone is in the lawn in front of Beausejour.
