Fort Lawrence, and nearby (approx 3km) Fort Beausejour, were a major site in the battle between France and England over Acadia. In 1672 Acadian settlers built the village of Beaubassin at this site, but in 1750, as the British advanced and the French burned the village and moved across the Missiguash River in an attempt to preserve the river as a border and built Fort Beausejour.
The British established Fort Lawrence at this site as a response to Fort Beausejour. Ultimately, the British captured Fort Beausejour, renaming it Fort Cumberland, and abandoned Fort Lawrence. Today there is no evidence of Fort Lawrence remaining and only the plaque gives evidence of its existence.
