The town was established in 1883 and later became a stop on the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad; the town's fortunes tended to rise and fall with the successes and failures of the railroad.
On April 14, 1983, a massive landslide moved part of the mountain and blocked two creeks, forming an dam. Over the next few months the dam grew until the resulting lake reached nearly 200 feet deep, 2.5 miles long and over 800 acres in size.
The water was later drained, the road was replaced, a diversion tunnel formed for the water, and the town remains most home roofs sticking through the settled silt.
