visit link) Murals may be found in the Greek Theatre and the Voorhies Memorial in Denver's Civic Center Park. They were painted to honor Charles Hansen Tool, Colorado Attorney General who died at 30.
The Greek Theater houses two of the four outdoor murals in the park. “The Prospector” and “The Trapper”, each represent the early settlement of the west theme. The other two murals, “The Buffalo” and “The Elk” are located under the ceiling of the Voorhies Memorial. Born in Colorado Springs, 1881, True studied at the Corcoran Art School in Washington, D.C. under Howard Pyle and Frank Brangwyn. (
visit link) He specialized in images of the frontier west and was particularly interested in American Indian lifeways.
Of the Indian warrior culture, he said: “An epic which has never been properly sensed or understood by the white race”. His other local works include murals in Colorado National Bank and the Colorado State Capitol Rotunda.
The murals were restored in 1976 by Philip Henselman. They were recently restored for the 2008 Democratic National Convention.
The Voorhies Memorial (north end of Civic Center Park) contains the two other True murals. John E. Voorhies was a banker who made his wealth in the early mining days. He funded the memorial which was located across from his home at 1425 Cleveland. The structure was designed by William Ellsworth and Arthur Addison Fisher to resemble the Water Gateway at the 1893 Columbian Exposition. [Excerpted from (
