The best description can be found at (visit link) , however, I will do my best to paraphrase.

The Ponce de Leon Inlet (commonly known as Ponce Inlet) area was originally named "Mosquito Inlet". This lighthouse was completed in 1887 and was originally named the Mosquito Inlet Lighthouse. The lighthouse was designed by Francis Hopkinson Smith, a noted writer and engineer. The lamp was first lit on November 1, 1887 by Keeper William Rowlinsku. The light was visible for almost 20 miles.
