The Iguaçu National Park (Parque Nacional do Iguaçu) was added to the list of World Heritage Sites in 1989. In 1999, the park was placed on the List of World Heritage in Danger when word of an illegal road was being built through the middle of the park splitting it into two. In 2001, the park was removed from the List of World Heritage in Danger when the road was bulldozed and steps were undertaken to restore the park.
The park is known for the impressive Iguaçu Falls. In addition, the park is home to many endangered species of mammals, birds and plants.
Brief Description from UNESCO site:
The park shares with Iguazú National Park in Argentina one of the world’s largest and most impressive waterfalls, extending over some 2,700 m. It is home to many rare and endangered species of flora and fauna, among them the giant otter and the giant anteater. The clouds of spray produced by the waterfall are conducive to the growth of lush vegetation.
