A state in the New England region of the northeastern US. Dr. Samuel Peters claimed that in 1763 he had christened the land as he stood on top of a high mountain (said to be Killington) from which he could see both Lake Champlain and the Connecticut River (the location of this sign, though much further north), saying, "The new name is Verd-Mont, in token that her mountains and hills shall be ever green and shall never die." Most historians feel this story is apocryphal, to say the least. In truth, the name was probably given by another.
Vermont ranks 45th by total area and 43rd by land area at 9,250 square miles (24,000 square km). It is the second least populous state (after Wyoming). The only New England state with no coastline along the Atlantic Ocean, Vermont is notable for the Green Mountains running north to south (providing the state's nickname) and Lake Champlain (which makes up half of Vermont's western border). Vermont was the first to join the US after the original thirteen.
