John Robert Godley

Born: May 29 1814, in Dublin, Ireland

Died: 17 November 1861, in London, England

Eldest son of an Irish landlord, John Robert Godley, attended school at Harrow, and later studied at Christ College, Oxford. In his younger life Godley travelled through Ireland and North America and developed his ideas of how colonies should be established and governed.

Godley was persuaded to lead the new colony, and with the establishment of the Canterbury Association Godley formed 'Christ Church' in 1850.
