Former town elementary school, renovated and converted to senior apartments.

Built in 1903, this is a 2 story, brick veneer, gable roofed, square plan, vernacular Italianate style building with a modern two storey, gable roof with a wood frame wing added during rehab. The interior is well preserved and retains original finishes. The large entry hall remains intact with original suspended lights, classroom doors, and main staircase. The Italianate style, relatively outdated even as the building was constructed, complements the style of Richford’s brick commercial buildings in the downtown district only two blocks away.

The school was built in response to an 1892 Vermont law requiring the abolition of district schools and consolidation of services, as well as the enforcement of compulsory attendance laws. It was also a period when Richford’s population was booming as new manufacturing ventures attracted workers and created increased demand for educational services.
