When the city of Buffalo was laid out by Joseph Ellicott, agent for the Holland Land Company, he reserved the block now occupied by this building for his personal residence and estate. For the next 100 years or so, it became known as Ellicott Square. In 1895, the Ellicott Company commissioned Daniel Burnham of Chicago to design an office building. Occupying the whole block, the 10-story, $3.5 million building became the largest office building in the country. It took only one year to build.

It is similar in design to the Rookery in Chicago, which Burnham also designed. The first two floors open into a central court with floors 3-10 looking out onto the atrium roof. The structural steel was designed in order to support several more floors if desired. The exterior is constructed of terra cotta now painted gray in an Italian Renaissance style. Throughout the interior court is an elaborate mosaic tile floor and two grand staircases. Be sure to check out the link below for many more pictures of the interior.

The building was designated an engineering landmark by the Buffalo Section of American Society of Civil Engineers in 1989.
