Two canals flow from the Chicago area southwesterly into the Illinois Waterway (ultimately River), which all meet here in Lemont,IL. There is frequent barge and small boat traffic, protected by the mini-lighthouse.

As Chicago was growing in the late 1800s, flood waters flushed pollution into Lake Michigan contaminating the drinking water supply, leading to thousands of deaths from waterborne disease. The Chicago Sanitary & Ship Canal and Cal-Sag Channels were completed in 1922 to help reverse the flow of water drainage from Lake Michigan into the Illinois River, thus protecting the Lake Michigan and providing clean lake water to dilute the pollution in the rivers.
This spot is managed by the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Chicago. There is an aeration waterfall at the confluence. Visit during normal business hours. Access from the "confluence" of Archer Ave. & Rt 83 (Kingery) in Lemont, IL.
