Nickel Plate Road Caboose #436, a bay window caboose, is on display in Belmont, NC next to the old Belmont Depot. This was all part of the P&N Museum until 2004 when the lease ran out and was not extended. The depot has become a boutique and the train cars are in great shape, but no info is available on thier future plans.
The name "Nickel Plate Road" seems like a curious moniker for a railroad with the official title of The New York, Chicago & St.Louis Railroad Company and derives from the period when they were expanding through Northern Ohio and three routes were surveyed. One of those routes said they were "nickel plated" and the name rapidly became the official nickname for the railroad.
Current Use: The caboose is currently part of the exhibit at the Belmont, NC depot.
Type Of Caboose: Bay Window
