The history of the Como Zoo dates back to 1873, when the City of Saint Paul acquired three hundred acres of prime land on the shores of Lake Como for a new public park that would later be known as Como Park. The first major construction done at Como Zoo was in the 1930s. Federally funded Works Progress Administration projects included the bear grotto, Monkey Island, barn, and the Main Zoo building. This waymark is for the the art deco Zoological Building, designed in 1936 by Charles Bassford.
This building was once the main Zoo building, but after the new Animal Support building was completed in 2003, the Zoological Building was renovated and exhibit animals are no longer housed there. Currently, this building houses Zoo Administration staff and offices.
