Pipestone County's courthouse was constructed in 1901 at a co. st of $45,000. The elaborate design is described as Beaux Arts style but it features a Renaissance dome and a style that suggests Richardsonian architecture. The building is rectangular with small bays and projecting entrances. It is considered an outstanding example of local use of quartzite stone.
The dome has four clock faces, each showing a different time. These were always intended to be decorative only. There are no associated clockworks. A bronze statue of Lady Justice tops the dome. The courthouse sits in a large square a few blocks from the downtown area of Pipestone. The building underwent renovations in 1980, then was completely renovated and restored in 1995 and rededicated in 1996. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980
