Long Description:
Green Lakes State Park contains two unique lakes, Green Lake and
Round Lake. Both lakes were created around 14,000 years ago, at the
end of the last Ice Age. As the glacial ice melted, the huge
torrents of melting ice flowed into this valley, creating the two
lakes we see today. Both lakes were determined to be Meromictic
lakes, meaning that the surface water never mixes with the bottom
water. Most lakes turn over their water at least twice a year
during Spring and Fall, however, Meromictic lake water never mixes
in this fashion. That and the presence of above normal calcium
carbonate levels, give the water a deep green appearance. At one
time, Native Americans believed the lakes to be "bottomless",
however, they have been measured and Round Lake is 180 feet deep
while Green lake is 195 feet deep. Round Lake was designated a
National Natural Landmark by the Dept. of the Interior in 1975. New
York State has created a wonderful state park with these lakes as
its' centerpiece. There is a beach here, a Robert Trent Jones
designed golf course, 7 cabins and 137 campsites, picnic areas, and
9 hiking and biking trails covering almost 13 miles of scenic
splendor. There is an entrance fee to gain access to this state
park.
