Owned by Steve Lebitschnig, the co-founder/director of the Hub City Jazz & Blues Society, Fascinating Rhythm has been a focal point for local music fans of most genres going on 20 years.
Now in its fourth location and the largest, the interior of the store is very eclectic and can be interesting to navigate. But for the music buff, that is what makes stores like this so much fun to browse, you never know what you might find here. The selection in the store runs from the latest cd's to the old rare vinyl record you need to complete your collection. There is a large collection of old radios, turntables and old stereo equipment along with old posters on display throughout the store.
Steve is passionate about the local music scene and carries cd's of many of the acts that Nanaimo has produced no matter the size or how well known the act may be. You'll also find posters for the latest local music presentations on the windows as you enter. The store has developed a great reputation amongst musicians and many acts that have played in Nanaimo or passed through have made sure that some time has been spent here. Some of the more household names to have come to peruse the titles are Cowboy Junkies’ Michael Timmins and blues legends Colin James and Duke Robillard. Elvis Costello and local Jazz musician, Diana Krall have also been here on several occasions.
Information for this waypoint comes from my own experiences at the store along with an article by David Morrison on his website, thefreelancewriter.ca
