This was the main passenger railway station in San Francisco handling trains carrying passengers from all over the United States. Prior to the existing building there was a Mission Revival-style building demolished in the 1970s. See this web site for a newspaper article from 1912 about prior stations at this location - (visit link) Over the years it has morphed into a major commuter railway terminal for Caltrains, serving the San Francisco Peninsula as the northern terminus on the 77-mile system. The plan is to demolish the existing station and extend the line to the vicinity of Market Street, in an underground tunnel with a new underground station.
