The National Register gives an address at 1390 Washington Street, which as far as I know only has track in the street out front. Far and away the most meaningful location for this site is at the power house and museum, which is the address I have given below and the cooresponding coordinates.
The cable cars are propelled by attachment to a moving one-inch diameter wire rope hidden in a slot below the pavement and between the running rails of the narrow-gauge track. The wire rope is powered by a 500 horse power motor located in the power house at 1201 Mason Street in San Francisco. The coordinates given above are for this location, which also houses a museum, a car shop (closed to the public), and a view of the cable motors and the cable routing under the adjacent street. A visit to this museum has to be the highlight of any trip to San Francisco and indeed, the cable cars themselves have become the most popular tourist attraction in the City.
The history of the cable car system is an interesting one and is available on Wikipedia, among other sites. It should be noted that cable cars existed in other cities, including Seattle and Cincinnati. Sadly, San Francisco was the only city with the foresight to preserve them and ensure their place in the City as a huge tourist draw.
