Lava Lands Visitor Center is located off U.S. Hwy. 97 at the base of Lava Butte, a 500 foot high cinder cone. The Center opened in 1975 to highlight the geology of the Deschutes National Forest. In 1990 the Newberry National Volcanic Monument (managed by the Deschutes National Forest) was created and included the Lava Lands area. Today the visitor center serves the public with information on the Deschutes National Forest and Newberry National Volcanic Monument.
From the visitor center there are two nature trails: The Trail of the Molten Land and The Trail of the Whispering Pines. From the visitor center a road leads to the summit of Lava Butte where there is a 360° view of the area and another nature trail around the crater rim.
Hours of Operation: Typically open 9 to 5 from mid-May to mid-October. Early and late in the season the center is only open Wednesday through Sunday.
Public Washrooms: Mens and Womens Only
Snacks/Drinks at the facility: No - Look elsewhere
