St. Charles was originally built as a seminary for training priests. In 1844, Father Francis DeSales Brunner brought with 7 priests and 7 brothers from Switzerland to begin a mission for serving the large German population living in the area at the time. The grounds currently serve as a retirement village for priests and brothers.

The cemetery here is for those who formerly served the church. There area approximately 500 graves at this cemetery. The cemetery is also surrounded with outdoor stations of the cross.
